Rest

Picture
Rest is the refreshing quiet or repose of sleep, the refreshing ease or inactivity after exertion or labor. We need to understand that rest is more than merely sleeping. According to Dr. Frederick Rossiter, "Recreation is a vitalized for of rest." Therefore, rest can simple be a change in activity. For example, if one works indoors around a desk, he or she should go outdoors from time to time for a walk and that will provide rest.
Many turn to amusement as a form of recreation, however, most amusements consist primarily of foolishness and will not supply the deep refreshment that one needs. All true recreation must be re-creative; it genuinely refreshes, draws us closer to God and strengthens us for the better performance of our daily duties.
Sleeping is the major form of rest for just about one-third of our lives should be spent sleeping. Hence, we all need good sound sleep every night alongside the other re-creative activities that we will engage in on a regular basis.

Why Do We Need To Rest?•Sleep is a period of inactivity - during which the faculties can restore expended nerve energy. It is period when our bodies can eliminate wastes that have accumulated faster than we can eliminate them and restore depleted energies that we lost thus enabling the body to catch up on its homework. And according to Dr. Mary Anne McNeilus, "Lack of sleep promotes disease by diminishing  the bodies ability to restore and repair its tissues and organs."  God’s Healing Way
According to surveys conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (1999-2004) reveal that at least 40 million Americans suffer from over 70 different sleep disorders and 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more. Most of those with these problems go undiagnosed and untreated. In addition, more than 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month - with 20 percent reporting problem sleepiness a few days a week or more. Furthermore, 69 percent of children experience one or more sleep problems a few nights or more during a week.
What Will Happen If We are Deprived of Rest?Lack of sleep affects us physically, mentally and spiritually causing: Aching muscles Stunted growth Very slow healing Poor memory
This study follows a series of others that have found similar associations with other illnesses, including several reports from the Harvard-run Nurses' Health Study that has linked insufficient or irregular sleep to increased risk for colon cancer, breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
Health Benefits of Rest
Rest encompasses sleep, relaxation and recreation. Good sleep synthesizes protein, maintains bones, repairs tissues, gives mental refreshment, enhances positive emotions, and stores short-term memory. Rest on the Seventh-day of the week according the fourth commandment of the Decalogue allows us to be blessed by the Creator physically, spiritually and mentally, because it perfectly complements our biorhythms, which were programmed in us when we were created. (Genesis Diet Cookbook, iv.)
How Should We Rest?
  • Sleep 7-8 hours each night in a dark well ventilated room. Remember that sleep before midnight is twice beneficial, due to growth hormone activity between 9 pm and 12 am.
  • Go to bed with an empty stomach (3hrs after eating).
  • Engage in only moderate physical activity before retiring.
  • Have a clear conscience, with the mind a peace.
  • Take one day off each week for rest.
